Boston, our lucky town

Reprint from DAN #20:

Bruce Springsteen: The Orpheum, Boston, MA, 12.16.95

2nd Night in Boston, the show which Jon Landau would consider later as
"the best so far on this tour". I would totally agree. Bruce was in a far
better mood than he was on Friday, the audience was more disciplined
and listened to what he had to say. Of course there were a couple of
exceptional highlights. The first one happened actually before the show
started. An elderly women from the Jon Landau Management (I think her
name was Susan) asked us if we were the four guys from Switzerland
(we get our tickets through Sony Music). A bit surprised we confirmed.
Then she asked us to wait after the show to pick us up.
The setlist of the 2nd Boston Show diferred a bit from the previous night.
The first one was a bittersweet rendition of "Mansion On The Hill", which
he did instead of "Nebraska". Also "Brothers Under The Bridge", a song
that didn't make it on "Tom Joad" , sounded new to our swiss ears.
"Born In The USA" came along without the long introduction he did the
night before. Probably the people really got it now what the song's
supposed to he all about. The next Change was the intense slide guitar
version of "Spare Parts" - scary and confusing.
As usual, the borderline part was a bit too long. Patrick would totally
agree, he had a really intense fight against his worst enemy, the sleep.
But the encores compensated for the long waiting. Something special
was in the air. We knew that Bruce wouldn't let the show end exactly the
Same way he did yesterday. "This is something I haven't done in a while"
he grumbled lively: "Promised Land" sounded fresh and deliberating, as if
he had written it a few minutes before. Only "My Best Was Never Good
Enough" was good enough to follow. A memorable night came to its end.
The music was over, but not the Show.
After the show the above mentioned lady picked us up and we went
backstage. After a timeless waiting (I talked to Jon Landau about the
upcoming European tour and watched all these V.I.P.s hanging around,
including Dave Marsh) we finally made it! We had our own audience with
the maestro. Bruce was really nice, although he looked a bit tired. He
was kind of surprised that four swiss guys would fly over to Boston only to
see him play. Well, sometimes certain things just have to be done. After a
ten minutes small talk and the signing of a couple of cd booklets we
wished merry Xmas and left the small dressing room.
Boston was definitely our Lucky Town! Hungry but lucky we went back
to our hotel. What a crazy and unforgettable night!
