Joe D’Urso & Stone Caravan

"Mirrors, Shoestrings & Credit Cards"

Does anybody know Joe D’Urso & Stone Caravan? Some of you might know him. For example those of you who have been at the Tradewinds in Seabright, N.J., on July 22 1995 to see Joe Grushecky playing with Bruce Springsteen and some members of the E Street Band (see Drive All Night issue 18/19). Joe D’Urso & Stone Caravan opened this historical event. After Springsteen saw them playing, he couldn’t believe that Joe D’Urso can’t make a living with his music. Yes, when you hear "Mirrors, Shoestrings & Credit Cards", you won’t believe it, too. Unfortunately, it is true!

But now, David Kimmel, the manager of Joe D’Urso, and me, try to change this. How? We’re gonna try to find a distributor for the excellent albums from Joe here in Europe and we also try to arrange an European tour this summer, where everybody is invited, of course.

Joe D’Urso plays excellent roots rock! His influences are some of the best rock’n’rollers the United States ever had: John Mellencamp, Bob Dylan, Tom Petty, Neil Young, Bruce Springsteen and others. But his music stands firmly on his own! On "Mirrors, Shoestrings & Credit Cards", the actual album (it’s the forth one!), he "covered" for example the Chuck Berry/Bruce Springsteen song "Bye Bye Johnny". He not only "covered" the song, he added some lyrics (Dead Rock Stars) where he pays tribute to Kurt Cobain and also changed the arrangements.

When you hear "Jesse Quentin", you’ll also recognize that Joe D’Urso is a great songwriter ("...Jesse Quentin didn’t care if you were black or white, shot down in a city night... defending the law"). On the last song of the album, "Rock’n’Roll Station", he pays tribute to his heroes, his influences. He included some phrases of great songs from Petty, Springsteen, Billy Joel and others.

The music is classic roots-rock with some influences from the 70’s (keyboard). Joe’s voice is excellent! The ballads are heartbreaking, the rockers are very strongly sung. This gives the actual album a very special note. You’ll recognize Joe’s music from lots of others!
