Nils Lofgren
Live in Rubigen (BE), Mühle Hunziken, 02/08/95
Reprint from DAN # 16:
Nils Lofgren was back on the road through Europe for a couple of
shows. Last Wednesday, he played the only gig in Switzerland. The
event happened at the "Mühle Hunziken" in Rubigen (BE), which is kind
of Switzerland's Stone Pony I guess. Many of the most famous Swiss
bands have here anytime a fantastic party when they're playing the
Mühle Hunziken. The audience is different than in Zurich or other cities
because Rubigen is just a little village - same as Asbury Park, N.J., you
know.
First, bevor the show, we made an interview with Nils Lofgren which you
can read right after this report. The show started at nine o'clock with the
Samuel Eddy band from Ireland. They played for 45 minutes some quite
good blues-rock.
Nils Lofgren started at quarter past ten with the Samuel Eddy band plus
his brother Tom Lofgren on guitar and keyboard. They opened with Nils'
tribute to Keith Richards, "Keith Don't Go". From the beginning to the
end of the show, Nils always played a lot of guitar. His well-known solis
went sometimes on up till three of four minutes. The solis never were
boring, you know, always different. When I sometimes closed my eyes
and listened to Nils' guitar, I then had just kind of a conversation with his
guitar. Nils' guitar talked and I was listening to her, built up my own
imaginations what she wanted to say. This was such a wonderful feeling,
you know. Eyes closed, concentrating on his guitar. It gave me the
sense of freedom and peace, like being reborn again. Nils is one of the
best guitar player, definitely.
As longer as the show went on, Nils was getting relaxed more and more.
He danced around on stage, jumped in the air and talked to the
audience a couple of times. He really felt "at home" on stage. It seemed
just like he loved to play the guitar. This was making him very happy! He
also had some fun with his brother Tommy who did an incredibly job. He
always changed from the guitar to the keyboard and back. Again and
again.
I really was surprised when I saw Nils taking the chair from the keyboard
to play two songs on the keyboard (can't remember which ones). The last
time I saw Nils he never played the keyboard. It was fun anyway.
Nils played during the show two cover's: The Beatles' "Any Time At All"
and the Stones' "It's All Over Now". Other highlights were "I Came To
Dance", "Silver Lining", "Shine Silently", "Valentine" (including a never
ending guitar solo from Nils) and, of course, "Cry Tough".
The show ended after two hours. These two hours included a lot of fun,
emotions, dancing and laughing. But most of all, it included something
positive, you know. There always was something positive, like positive
thoughts or so. I think it made everybody happy, real happy, you know. It
was just like Rock'n'Roll is supposed to be: a positive force. Well, the gig
himself was not very special or so, I guess. You know, no light shows or
some other stuff. There was just Nils and the band playing some good,
positive music. That's the reason why the evening was excellent!
