Joe D’Urso & Stone Caravan

Rockland

As promised in the summer of ’97, Joe D’Urso’s album "Rockland" was re-released right before Christmas. "Rockland" is Joe’s third release, "Mirrors, Shoestrings & Credit Cards", the album we all know, was his 4th release. Because of the success he earned here in Europe and in the States, all the old albums are going to be re-released on CD. By the end of the winter, the first two albums, "45-10 Pearson" and "The Snow, The Rain & Yesterday" will follow on one CD.

So what can we expect from "Rockland"?

The album contains 15 songs. Correct, I wrote "songs" and not "new songs". Some of the songs made their way to "Mirrors, Shoestrings & Credit Cards", too, but in a different version. It seems like the band has fun in releasing different versions of the same song...! So to me, it would have been more interesting if I could listen to more other songs than to other versions of songs I already know. That’s because I think Joe D’Urso is a great songwriter. On the other side, it’s very interesting to see how the songs made their way to "Mirrors, Shoestrings & Credit Card", how the version changed. I remember talking to Joe last summer. He told me that the band recorded 10 different version of "Jesse Quentin". It was hard to decide which one will be on the album. The one from "Rockland" is different than the one from "Mirrors...". These are the songs on "Rockland":

When The Night Comes / Sometimes You Got To Let It Go / Running To You / The Otherside Of Midnight / Summertime Dreaming / The Call / Minute To Midnight / The Only One / Since She’s Been Gone / Never Missed You More / Soul Angel / Spinning World / Noisy Guitars / Jesse Quentin / The Night Is On Your Side.

Alright, what about the new songs? Well, my personal favourite from Joe D’Urso is on the "Rockland" album: "The Night Is On Your Side". This one contains it all: "...You Know This Journey May Never Have An End...You Can Trip, You Can Skip, You Can Slide And You Know, The Night Is On Your Side....". The music to the words is also fantastic! It’s this song and "Never Missed You More" (both songs were played at the El Internacional in Zurich) which make the album so special. Of course, if you don’t have "Mirrors" (I can’t imagine any Drive All Night member who doesn’t have "Mirrors..."), than "Rockland" will please you anyway! And if you already have "Mirrors" at home and you like it, than you should buy "Rockland", too. ‘Cause always remember: "The Night Is On Your Side".
