Coming back:

Southside Johnny & Bobby Bandiera

22 June 1995 Utrecht NL, Vredenburg

Reprint from DAN # 18/19:

Well, finally, we had him back in Europe. Acoustically, just accompanied
by Asbury Jukes guitar player Bobeeeeeeiiiiii Bandiera. In the time of
MTV and video clips, I think we can say it was a so called "unplugged
gig".

The show was sold out, maybe 500 fans. The small hall was seated. This
gave a very special touch to the gig. So it was very familiar. You could
have heard every word from John and Bobby, even if they didn’t spoke
through the microphone. They were both in a good mood, did a lot of
joking to themselves and to the crowd.

The songlist speaks for itself. We’ve heard everything this night: From
Southside songs to Little Steven compositions, from Bruce Springsteen to
Bobby Bandiera, from Tom Waits to Sam Cooke. When someone from
the audience asked the two for playing Madonna’s "Like A Virgin", they
unfortunately couldn’t remember the words. This was maybe better
anyway.

So the show started at 8.15 p.m. with "Coming Back". This was of
course the best song to start this show 'cause it's been a long time since
we laughed together. Finally, they were back right now. "Coming Back"
was followed by "Without Love", "Fade Away" and "(Looking For The)
Heart Of Saturday Night". I especially enjoyed listening to the two
Springsteen and Waits covers 'cause for me, Southside Johnny's got an
excellent voice to sing them! It sounded very emotional and true.
Southside's voice sounded like if he actually lived through the songs right
when he sung them! I guess this is one of the most important things in
Johnny's music, isn't it?

I've heard the next song, "Rosa", as also "I Talk To The Night" and "My
Dog's Gone Walking" for my very first time. I just wonder if they're gonna
make it on the next album. Another highlight was "(We'll Make This)
World Stand Still" which was written by Southside and Bobby. The song
is actually released on Bobby's debut album "Bandiera". Me, I just love
this song (I too love Roy Orbison!).

Well, the show went on with a couple of Jukes tunes and some cover
versions. After 100 minutes the show was over. This was a great pity! I
could have listen to them for at least another 100 minutes! Anyway, it
was real fun to see the crazy guys again and laughing together for over
one and a half hour. Everything's over sometimes.
